DECEMBER 2001

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The University of Toronto at Scarborough is seriously deficient in space for student facilities. This coupled with an increased enrolment results in an urgent need for a student centre.

The Centre will be much more than a simple shell for various activities. It will be a building which will be the focus of student life and student government on the campus of the University of Toronto at Scarborough, a home for clubs, and a location for student meetings both formal and informal, with a variety of different places where it will be possible to relax in different ways. It will be somewhere for which all the students on the campus will be proud to take responsibility. The Student Centre will be a multi-purpose and flexible facility incorporating space for student government, student clubs and associations, student services, services such as a convenience store, copy shop and food outlets as well as high demand meeting rooms and different types of lounges. It will not only bring together different campus groups, but will also provide a place to welcome and serve the students.

The campus master plan locates the Student Centre on Military Trail at a major entry to the campus. The Centre must exhibit a strong collegial image to Military Trail but its main access will be from the campus Ring Road. The plan is for a 4352 gross square meter two-storey facility, connected at the south end of the building to the Bladen Building and Recreation Centre. The concept is to include all the high traffic uses - retail, Student Council offices, a café/pub and games room on the at-grade level, with quieter activities - student clubs, lounges, multi-faith prayer room and offices - on the upper floor. The design must be flexible to accommodate evolving student needs over time.

PROGRAM AND BUDGET

The program defines a total of 4350 gross square meters. The construction cost is estimated at $8.6 million excluding GST and escalation.
